A cow in Poland made headlines in 2018 after escaping while being loaded for transport to a slaughterhouse.
She broke free, reached Lake Nysa, and swam out to the small islands, dodging people who tried to catch her. Early reports said her owner spent about a week trying to bring her back, then started leaving food while she stayed on the islands. The story drew national attention, with calls for her to be spared.
But the ending wasn’t a peaceful “island retirement”: later reports said she was eventually captured to be moved to safety and died during transport after being sedated, apparently from stress.
